Meet the Artist

Louise Dee

Louise dee is an emerging artist working primarily with painting. She was born in England, emigrated to Canada and is currently based on the west coast in Vancouver BC. She brings to her art practice an interest in human psychology and a curiosity about what it means to belong... to yourself, to a social group and within a society. She is interested in the complexity of human relationships and group dynamics, the angst of adolescence, the verbal and non-verbal ways individuals communicate connection (or not) and the power of the collective to influence human behaviour. Prior to completing a BFA in 2018 and turning her attention to painting full time, she pursued careers in physiotherapy and counselling. Primarily working with oil paint on canvas she paints fictional portraits and invented narrative scenes based on her imagination, personal experiences and observations of everyday life. In 2019 one of her paintings was short listed for the Kingston National Portrait Prize in Canada.

Artist Statement: Public Pool

In 2020 at the height of the pandemic, when group gatherings were being limited and social distancing was becoming the norm, the Public Pool paintings began. A questioning of the importance of human connection and what it means to be connected.

In each imagined gathering place, groups of young people cluster at the side of a swimming pool while some enjoy the water. Bodies are interconnected within the physical space, and while some individuals are engaged and connected to each other through proximity and activity, some remain separate. In the pool, figures are buoyed by or submerged in the water while others float on the surface in inflatable swans; each in a state of suspended animation, gliding on the surface while feet paddle frantically underneath. They are all joined and experiencing this day together but also in their own worlds, a reflection maybe on this time of global disruption and recalibration due to Covid 19.
