Studio Lenca aka Jose Campos is an artist from El Salvador living and working in the UK. He was born in La Paz, El Salvador and like many had to flee the country during its violent civil war during the late 1980s. He travelled to the US by land, illegally with his mother, and grew up in San Francisco, California as a queer minority in the gaze of a strictly conservative administration as an undocumented ‘illegal alien’. Ultimately, he found refuge in the UK and became a British Citizen in 2007. In 2013 he graduated from MA Contemporary Dance at London Contemporary Dance, in 2015 from Art & Design PGCE at Goldsmiths University of London, and in 2019 from MA Arts & Learning also at Goldsmiths University of London. He has exhibited in many countries such as the UK, the US, and his home El Salvador. His working title refers to the term ‘Studio’, reflecting Campos’ dance practice and embodying an empty space for experimentation. Lenca refers to the indigenous people that lived in El Salvador prior to the Spanish colonization of El Salvador.
