Cut Apple, 2021

Acrylic on canvas

110x110 cm

(ships from Slovakia)

Set against swathes of luscious green pasture and a cloudy sky, an apple that has been split in two lies defeated on the ground. The skin of the golden apple is dotted with patches of exposed flesh, perhaps at the hands of a little creature or through natural decay. The cross-section of the apple is represented in beautiful, soft pinks and yellow with hints of purple and blue. The core of the fruit is arranged with implied human facial features in what appears as a scrunched-up nose, eyes, and open mouth. A ruff of yellow surrounds these features, like a frilled neck lizard. Underneath the apple is ombré layers of soil where the surreal colours give a sense of the mythical ecosystem that exists below the surface. Tunnel structures run through the ground, appearing hollow and ominous, making the viewer question whether this apple will plant seeds or purely disintegrate into nothing. This piece prompts the viewer to pause for reflection on humanity’s impact on the natural world.
